Pass the hanky - Armstrong to spill his heart to Opra
It was announced this week that disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong will appear on the Oprah Winfrey show next week in an 80 minute ‘tell all’ interview. Most of the major broadsheet and tabloid journalists have jumped on the bandwagon, with cynical views about how staged the interview will be and rightly so. It is widely anticipated that Armstrong’s PR team will have worked tirelessly to prepare the scripted question and answer process, including how and when the tears should role.
For those that are passionate about cycling, the interview will be a huge pull, with people seeking answers from an individual who has destroyed a large section of the history of the sport and without doubt damaged the brand
. But the key thing about sport is that it is always changing, always pushing new boundaries, with new personalities emerging to capture the hearts of its supporters. You only have to look at how the British success in cycling at the London Olympics and Bradley Wiggins win in the Tour de France has started to restore the credibility of the sport. Five years from now, the sport will be cleaned up, a new star will be on the scene, sponsors and advertisers
will come back and the sport and cycling brand
will move on.
What won’t change is that that four of his children are growing up with a father that has been branded possibly the greatest sporting cheat of all time. They will have to deal with this throughout their lives, when they are at school, every time they compete in sport and when applying for jobs . As a father of two myself, Lance Armstrong’s greatest failing is letting his kids and family down after they have supported his career for so long. Armstrong will have to live with that guilt for the rest of his life.
